Berkeley & Car-aoke

Interview is tomorrow (today?)! I’m pretty excited since this will be more informative than most my other interviews. I have a loose understanding of what my major actually denotes but I only have a very basic and vague idea of what career paths it opens up. Hopefully I don’t sound like a complete idiot when I respond to the default “why major?” question. It’s times like these that I regret not applying to the UCs under anthropology.

I’m pretty surprised that it only takes around an hour to get to UCB. :o I can’t wait to have car-aoke with my dad on the commute. I’ll have to download some good songs tomorrow (today?) morning while cramming for that Differential Calculus midterm.

“The scientists by large know more liberal arts, than the science known by liberal artists and that needs to change. If you go to a science cocktail party and someone talks about Shakespeare no one is gonna say “Oh I was never good at Shakespeare! I was terrible in nouns and verbs!” No, you’ll never hear that. But if you go to a liberal art party, an artists party, and someone start talking about math it’s all “Oh I was never good at math, I hated math” and they all chuckle and all agree, and all like sip the next sip of champagne and go on talking about the art and that’s somehow ok. No that’s not ok.” —

Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

I agree. But it really makes me sad when I hear scientists saying that literature is useless because it’s all about unreal stories, or that art in general is meaningless because is subjective. It’s not ok this either.

Happy 210th Birthday Victor Hugo!

I spent my free time today reading Les Miserables to celebrate his life and works. Oddly relaxing. I haven’t had the motivation to settle down and read for hours on end but I realized how much I miss that “in-the-zone” feeling.

Skinny Love Birdy

cherylsunshine:

Skinny Love (Cover) - Birdy

I love this cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love.” I remember a few months ago, Tablo tweeted about Birdy and I got into her from then on. Her voice reminds me of Taru’s voice a lot. There’s something about it that’s so innocent and sweet and sometimes melancholy.

Rambles

  • I have just finished writing my worst essay to turn in for class. Dracula is just not my cup of tea.
  • Whatever. It’s late. I’m tired. I’m not going to edit that crap.
  • Sigh. This week was going pretty well too. That is, until tonight (or really this morning -_-).
  • On second thought, my science fiction short story was a pretty bad essay too. That was rather embarrassing.
  • I’m hungry but I shouldn’t eat.
  • I don’t want to wake up early tomorrow and run.
  • I can’t believe I have work until 7:30 tomorrow. WHY. I’LL HAVE A SKIMPY LUNCH AND DINNER AGAIN. But I guess that’s good for my diet.
  • At least I’ll be able to finalize tickets for Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular tomorrow (if all goes well with my parents)! Excitement. I hope there’s still good seats left near the middle of the golden circle.
  • Dumb Ticketmaster keeps blocking me so I can’t check for seats.
  • Thank God it’s Thursday.
  • I might be addicted to peanut butter. That stuff is delicious. I don’t know why I’m suddenly hooked onto it even though I’ve had it all my life. Strange.
  • Les Miserables is really good. I’m almost halfway through that brick! But I’m really sad that I don’t have time to read it everyday. Work tires me out like crazy even though I just tell at kids to shut up.
  • I swear three kids at work asked if I did anything to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Tuesday. I told them I had a very romantic day without chocolate.

Valentine's Day

Things I did to celebrate all the love in the world today:

  • Wake up to the romantic sounds of the marimba tone.
  • Go for a romantic jog in the morning.
  • Eat a romantic breakfast consisting of porridge, leftovers, and bread.
  • Listen to a romantic lecture on voice leading in music theory.
  • Eat a romantic lunch consisting of some yogurt and a banana.
  • Attend a oh-so-realistic and romantic world economic conference with delegates from Catopia, Llamaland, and the People’s Republic of Beinland.
  • Watch clips of romantic films like The Wolfman and Dracula.
  • Romantically yell at kids to do their work at my romantic workplace.
  • Eat a romantic apple for dinner.
  • Go to sleep at a romantic time in the evening so that I may wake up early to finish romantic homework.
Happy 14th of February!

The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

Instead of watching Les Mis with Jennifer, I watched the Phantom movie!

General thoughts: It’s different. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either.

  • Singing: Rossum really likes to glissando when she has large leaps. At first it didn’t bother me that much, but she does it EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unacceptable. I didn’t like Butler’s voice either. I feel like he has some kind of a weird accent. Overall, it reminds me of a lion?! Wilson was surprisingly good. I really enjoyed his singing. Miranda Richardson who played Madame Giry didn’t sound strict enough. Jennifer Ellison (Meg Giry) did well but she doesn’t have very many lines. :c I’ve always wanted Meg to have more lines.
  • Acting: Minnie Driver did an excellent job as Carlotta. I didn’t like Butler’s take on the Phantom because he wasn’t angry enough. I have neutral feelings about Rossum’s acting. Not bad, not good. I thought Wilson did well as Raoul. He seems like a sweet guy!
  • Extra Scenes: That sword fight at the graveyard was vastly unnecessary. I hate how they make Raoul release the Phantom. -_-
  • Costumes & Such: How could they change Christine’s masquerade dress? The pink and blue one was so much prettier. Raoul’s hair is really ugly looking though. :c The Phantom’s
  • Scenery: I liked how they were able to make a lot of the sets really come alive. The opera house is gorgeous!

Is it better than the 25th anniversary edition? No, definitely not, but I do think it’s worth watching for all Phantom phans.

In other news, I just spent the past 30 minutes conversing in all caps with Jane Jun who is also a massive fan of Ramin/Phantom of the Opera/Les Miserables. She’s even going to see Love Never Dies in theatres this month so I hope we meet up there so we can have a in-person all caps conversation.

RescueTime → rescuetime.com

I just downloaded the application yesterday night and it’s pretty interesting. In a nutshell, RescueTime tracks how long users spend on useful/distracting websites and makes a bunch of nice charts to help them visualize how much they work/procrastinate.

There’s a good article explaining some of its features and a few ways to take advantage of these abilities here. Users can set up goals for efficiency, adjust the hours for when RescueTime tracks, correctly categorize activities as productive or unproductive, and more!

I love the Efficiency tab on the dashboard because it shows details about your efficiency through the day/week. Here is what RescueTime tells me about the past two days:

I really should be more productive.

TGIT

I am so glad it’s Thursday. For some reason, I couldn’t motivate myself to do more than the minimum to get by this week. It was a chill week because I slacked off but that only means all the work I haven’t been doing piles up for this weekend. -_- Stupid Iris.

To celebrate, I went to Trader Joe’s today and bought lots of yummy pita chips! I was going to get more of the Cinnamon & Sugar ones but they only had one bag left. :c

Of Livestreams and Work

I’m livestreaming the 25th anniversary performance at around 8PM (PST) this evening, because Jennifer has yet to see Ramin in all his glory. If anyone on here is interested, here’s the link!

(Re)Watching POTO is the perfect reward to a long Sunday of endless homework. I have yet to get through 4+ days worth of Dracula reading and essay outlining. Nor have I gotten through ten chapters of music theory in preparation for Tuesday’s lecture on Chapter 11. On the bright side, I feel pretty confident with all the different non-chord tones after that big review session last week. I haven’t finished my essay and resume for that online class either, but at least, I’m ahead of the game for Differential Equations! I’m glad Jane and I got some good work done on The Lonely Pen these past few days and I might be getting a job soon too. Excitement.

I have so much stuff to do for the next few days. :c

Howl's Magic Castle Giovanni Mirabassi

After a productive session of The Lonely Pen, 언니 and I spontaneously decided to go music hunting. I’d have to say that Jane’s taste in music is impeccable. Although we disagreed on a few songs, for the most part we agreed that we both liked nice jazzy beats. I realized that I really like sunny-outdoor-cafe/guitar/happy type songs as well. c:

After clicking through a bunch of “related” videos on Youtube, I happened on this amazing arrangement of Joe Hisaishi’s “Merry-Go-Round of Life” from Howl’s Moving Castle. I’ve been listening to this while doing differential equations today and it’s one of those great jazzy homework songs. I really like the reintroduction of the main theme after the first ad lib part. The drum set accompaniment entrance seems a bit abrupt but it’s forgivable. I can’t tell what the bass is doing during the second ad lib section though. :c

Slowly, my contemporary piano playlist is growing from Lang Lang, Li Yundi, Yiruma, and Hisaishi to other classical composers/performers.

Coming Home Ramin Karimloo

I can’t believe it’s been 10 months since I first heard this gorgeous voice!

An excerpt from “Coming Home” had been available on raminkarimloo.com for a while now. I’ve listened to it a couple of times, but it has never caught my attention as particularly amazing like “Til I Hear You Sing.” After listening to the entire song yesterday night, I honestly felt a bit disappointed.

Ramin’s voice sounds kind of strained when singing “I can tell when something’s not right.” And overall, the chorus isn’t ear-catching. There’s a few really beautiful notes here and there when he sings in his mid-range but other than that, there’s nothing special about the song.

All in all, the song reminds me Lady Antebellum…just not as good (and overplayed).  But then again, it’s not really his fault since Tedder did the song. Vocally, it was OK: not the best and definitely not the worst, but I expected a lot more from such a great vocalist.

But I love that blazer at 2:29 in the music video. It looks absolutely beautiful.
